Tre Martin and Jamal Thompson

Tre Martin and Jamal Thompson were lifelong friends from West Baltimore and members of The Survivors. Tre tended to respond through immediate physical action, while Jamal often identified the policy, authority, or systemic failure surrounding the same danger. Both approaches were active forms of protection, and the friendship did not reduce either man to one role.

Origins

Tre and Jamal met through the West Baltimore Recreation Center circa 2007–2008. They grew up alongside Kevin, MJ, and Darnell, playing basketball and participating in center activities. When adults excluded MJ, Tre and Jamal both challenged the treatment rather than accepting it as ordinary.

During the summer 2014 crisis, Tre, Jamal, Kevin, and Darnell had spent months asking volunteers to include MJ and check on him. Tre confronted the immediate physical harm after Shanice assaulted MJ. Jamal remained part of the boys’ sustained challenge to the adults and systems that had allowed the exclusion and assault.

Dynamics and Communication

Tre often moved first when danger was physical. Jamal was more likely to identify how rules, decisions, and authority had created the danger. Their differences did not divide action from thought; Jamal acted alongside the group during crises, and Tre’s tactical decisions required analysis as well as speed.

The friendship continued through shared basketball, group meals, the Survivors group chat, and ordinary contact across military and educational separation. Jamal named the group chat “The Survivors” after the June 2019 incident, giving the five friends a constant point of contact as their adult lives carried them into different institutions and cities.

Shared History and Milestones

Summer 2014

Tre and Jamal joined Kevin and Darnell in repeatedly advocating for MJ after recreation-center volunteers stopped accommodating him. The boys’ objections preceded Kelsey Morrison’s arrival and continued through the response to Shanice’s assault.

June 2019

Tre, Jamal, Kevin, and Darnell reached MJ before police, spoke with him during the rooftop crisis, and persuaded him to drop the knife he had carried onto the roof. When Officer Rodriguez pointed his weapon at Kevin and fired a warning shot, Tre and Darnell pulled Kevin backward. Jamal witnessed the escalation and remained part of the friends’ response and the aftermath of the viral video. He later blamed himself for freezing when he believed Tre and the others had acted more quickly, although he had helped talk MJ down before the officers arrived.

The incident influenced both men’s later paths. Tre pursued Marine service; Jamal studied law and entered civil-rights work focused on police accountability, mental-health crisis response, and systemic reform.

December 2026 and Recovery

After Tre was catastrophically injured while saving more than thirty service members, Jamal flew to San Diego with Kevin, Darnell, and MJ and joined the hospital vigil. His presence belonged to the same group commitment that had kept the five connected through deployments, school, work, and earlier crises.

Public Context

National and Baltimore coverage of the Camp Pendleton rescue returned to the 2019 video and to the five friends’ adult lives. By then, Tre’s military service and Jamal’s civil-rights work represented different responses to the same experience of institutional escalation. Their friendship continued through basketball, teasing, meals, ordinary updates, and years of shared history beyond their professions.
